BioFort Science. 

Investigations within BioFort’s Division of Life Sciences & BioDefense is led by Prof. Dr. Sir. Christopher S. Lange, world leader in stem cell research, regenerative medicine, oncology and radiation biophysics. Prof. Lange’s major scientific contributions include demonstration that: (1) organ and organismal survival are quantitatively explained by the survival curve parameters of the underlying stem cells and their number and repopulation probability, (2) DNA Double-Strand Breaks (DSBs) are repaired (in mammalian cells), (3) Potentially Lethal Damage (PLD) and so-called Sub-Lethal Damage (SLD; actually Split-Dose Recovery) repair kinetics are identical with DSB rejoining kinetics and that the kinetics of DNA DSB repair are critical for the quantitative explanation of irradiated cell survival (the DSB model), (4) development and patenting of the Hybrid Spheroid Assay (HSA; an in vitro analogy to an  in vivo micro-metastasis) for the measurement of the cancer stem cell (CSC) fraction in tumors and their sensitivity to proposed treatment agents (radiation, chemotherapeutics, and immunotherapeutic conjugates) for individual patients, (5) creating and testing a model for the higher order packaging of the 30 nm chromatin fiber in mammalian nuclei (the clustered loop model), (6) identification of the pathophysiological mechanism behind radiation-induced reactivation of neurotrophic human herpes viruses, (7) prostatic plexus is the organ at risk for sexual toxicities associated with prostate cancer radiotherapy, as well as (8) folate hydrolase-1 (FOLH1) is a novel theragnostic target for antibody-mediated brachytherapy in Merkel cell carcinoma.
